Mud Runs

Mud Runs

Our experience in timing mud runs has consistently shown that because of the very challenging environment you need optimum performance from timing equipment.

The very conditions which make mud runs so enjoyable (and challenging) for your entrants, create a challenging environment for electronic timing equipment.

We consistently achieve very good results with RFID timing tags mounted one each side on the reverse of the entrant’s race number. The bib is then pinned to the entrant’s clothing (mid abdomen height or lower).

The elephant in the room is that by the very nature of a mud run event a few entrants will lose their chips. A proven advantage of using ChronoTrack®'s bib tags is that it is readily apparent which entrants have lost their bibs as they approach the finish line so appropriate action can be taken to record a manual time. When using shoe/ankle located tags some entrants also always lose their shoes and/or tags. Unlike the clarity provided when using bib tags, we had found it very difficult to identify everyone with a missing shoe or ankle tag.

The industry standard for electronic timing is for two timing lines at the finish, the standard line and a back-up to capture any tags missed on the first line. We use a combination of ChronoTrack®’s ground placed aerials (mats), and additional side mounted aerials (FlashPoints) to achieve optimal performance.

An additional significant benefit of bib tags, for both athletes and organisers, is that the tags are single use. You do not need to scrape around each entrant’s mud-covered ankle to retrieve the timing chip - and there is no additional charging for lost or non-returned chips.

Active Tags

We can also offer the option of using ChronoTrack’s active tags for mud run events. The active tags are threaded through a disposable strap, and the strap is then fastened securely around the entrant’s wrist or ankle.

The active tags provide a very high signal strength. The active tags must be returned. Any and all non returned or damaged active tags will be charged at replacement cost. Wrist attachment has a lower loss rate, however losses may be around 10% of starters depending on your course.

We would welcome the opportunity to work with you as timing providers for your Mud Run.

Tag Fitting - Mud Runs

Mud runs may use either active tags, or dual B-Tags.

The very things that make Mud Runs so much fun - the mud, water, and obstacles - provide a challenge for electronic timing equipment. To help us to accurately record your time please follow the guides below.

Active Tags

Attached by a strap and worn around your ankle (or wrist).

Neoprene Strap

Thread active tag onto strap through the tag's "wings". Firmly close velcro. Wrap strap around your ankle and firmly close strap.

All neoprene straps we provide are new.

Please note that as grit and/or sand reduces the adhesive capability of velcro we recommend that if using your own strap you check your velcro prior to fitting the tag.

N.B. while you may keep the neoprene strap, you must return the tag.

If you need help please see a timing official for assistance.

Disposable Strap

Thread strap through active tag's "wings". Wrap strap around either ankle. Push clip through hole in strap and snap dome firmly shut. Please note that the strap will not stay on your ankle (or wrist) if you do not snap the dome firmly shut and you will lose the strap and tag.

N.B. while the strap is disposable you must return the tag.

If you need help please see a timing official for assistance.

Dual B-Tags

Mud Run bibs have two ChronoTrack® B-Tags tags fitted to the reverse of each bib.

We recommend fitting your bib between hip and lower chest height to the outer clothing you will wear throughout the event.

Please attach the bib to your front. Please do not cover your bib and tags.

Tag reads are adversely impacted by water. Do not cover your tags with a hydration system or drink bottles
.

Tags can be damaged by bending or folding. Do not fold your tag.

If your bib with your tags comes off your clothing and you can recover your bib please carry it to the finsih line. Please do not carry any other entrant's bib(s) to the finish as they will be given your time.

If you lose your bib and can not locate it, please advise one of the team at the finish line so a time can be manually recorded and inserted into the results.

If you need help please see a timing official at your event for assistance.
